Alexander III of Macedon most commonly known as Alexander the Great, was a king of the ancient Greek kingdom of Macedon. He succeeded his father Philip II to the throne in 336 BC at the age of 20 and spent most of his ruling years conducting a lengthy military campaign throughout Western Asia, Central Asia, parts of South Asia, and Egypt. By the age of 30, he had created one of the largest empires in history, stretching from Greece to northwestern India. He was undefeated in battle and is widely considered to be one of history's greatest and most successful military commanders.
In 334 BC, Alexander the Great began his invasion of the Persian Empire and subsequently defeated the Persians in several battles before looting and destroying their capital, Persepolis, by fire in 330 BC. With the Persian Empire now effectively under Alexander's control, Alexander then decided to pursue Darius III, the Achaemenid King of Kings of Persia. Before Alexander reached him, however, Darius was killed by his relative Bessus, who was also the satrap of Bactria. Alexander eventually married Darius' daughter Stateira at Susa in 324 BC.
Alexander the Great had a warhorse called Bucephalus which accompanied him during many battles.
