Amos & Buster are a duo of bears who appear in the episode, Two Wet Bears.

Amos is part of the hapless duo of bears who find themselves stranded in the middle of the ocean. According to the opening of the short, Amos is still enjoying his swim and believing he and Buster are having a "wonderful time." Later, when the bears find the boat, Amos tries starting it by pulling on some sort of knob. When the bears crash onto the shore and are confronted by Beachcomber Bill, to which Amos starts the unsuccessful explanations. It is then that Amos points out that being put in a kettle and eaten is probably not a great idea to him. Finally, Amos seems to disappear from the plot aside from being in one moment where he's handed a rope by Paddy and at the very end when both bears are safe.

Buster is a large, heavy set bear that wears both a shirt and a pair of pants. His face is also slightly different from Amos as he has a well defined muzzle.

Buster is clearly the greater of the two bears as shown in his personality. When things are looking their worst, Buster tends to take action within the situation instead of pointing out the stupidly obvious, as Amos tends to do. Despite his initiative, he does still seems to come off as a dimwit. Then again, that would be the case with all the characters featured on the show.

Buster's voice is can be described as having a low tone, though he is prone to stuttering and spouting "doggone Amos", even when the expletive doesn't make sense in the current situation.

Amos is a large bear that wears pants. His face is also a tad different from Buster's, in that he does not have a defined muzzle and is overall younger looking. Amos also appears to have a slimmer frame than Buster. Amos's personality comes off being the lesser of the two bears. Amos's main contributions have only been stating the bleeding obvious as well as unintentionally making the situation worse. He is hinted at being a massive screw up in the past with Buster's repeated line "Doggone Amos". His voice can be described as an even more annoying version of Mickey Mouse. When asked how such a feat could be achievable, the show's extensive staff have routinely replied "with Sam Singer, anything is possible".

Amos and Buster seem to be best friends, or at least good acquaintances. They have been shown to enjoy swimming together (to an extent) as well as sticking by and up each other when things look bleak. Though they seem like great pals, they seem to have their moments of conflict, though this is merely explained through Buster's repeated expletive "Doggone Amos".

Buster's relationship with Amos can be vaguely described as a platonic friendship, though Buster is clearly the superior of the two, being both smarter and less annoying than Amos. Even so, they share a strong comradery by the show's standards, staying together in troubled times as well as sticking up for each other. Buster Bear does tend take his minor annoyances out on Amos by constantly saying "Doggone Amos", however.

Given that Beachcomber Bill sees the bears as fine dining, Buster's relationship with Bill can be described as a bit rocky. He seems to see Buster as the greater threat and chases him initially up a tree, wielding both a harpoon and an axe.

It seems that Paddy and the bears are also good friends, going by the fact that Paddy recognizes Buster and Amos when he arrives on the scene. The second half of Two Wet Bears involves Paddy's efforts in rescuing Amos and Buster from a voracious Beachcomber Bill, showing that he truly cares about the bears.

Notes[]

  • Due to having incomplete animation, rambling seemingly-improvised voices, and discorded organ music, The Adventures of Paddy the Pelican is considered to be one of the worst cartoons ever made, and is most famous for its appearance on animation historian Jerry Beck's public domain compilation DVD Worst Cartoons Ever!, where he is seen on the cover with a dunce hat doing school detention.
  • The Adventures of Paddy the Pelican's copyright date is listed as 1954, despite having aired in 1950.
