Origin[]

Argalia is a character from the Italian epic poem Orlando Innamorato by Matteo Maria Boiardo, and he also appears in Orlando Furioso by Ludovico Ariosto. He is a Saracen knight, the son of the king of Cataio (Cathay), and the brother of Angelica, a princess whose beauty would cause chaos among the knights.

After the siblings arrive in Charlemagne's court for a tournament in which both Christians and Pagans can participate. His sister offers herself as a prize to whoever will defeat Argalia (who assumes the identity of a knight named Uberto dal Leòne). In the consequent fighting competition, he imprisons one of the Christians. However, the second knight to fight, Ferraguto (a.k.a. Ferraù), kills Argalia which caused Angelica to flee, chased by leading paladins, especially Orlando and Rinaldo.
