Belle is a kind and loving young woman who appears to see the best in people. She immediately falls in love with Scrooge, but falls out when he begins to concern himself with money over their relationship. Belle still clearly cared for Scrooge and wanted to reach out to him, but his coldness prevented her from doing so, implying a longing from her end.
Belle is a young attractive woman who is always shown dressed in plain clothes of the Victorian era. In most adaptations, she admits to not being nearly as well off as Scrooge would like them to be. Because of this, her clothing tends to be very simple and common.
During Scrooge's visit with The Ghost of Christmas Past, it is shown that Scrooge first meets Belle at Fezziwig's party. Throughout the whole dance they shared, they felt a spark and get engaged. However, at another Christmas, Belle calls off the engagement following Scrooge's obsession with moneylending and finances. Finally, they visit a now-married Belle with her large, happy family on the Christmas Eve that Marley died. Scrooge, upset by hearing a description of the man that he has become, demands that the ghost remove him from the house.
