Bernard Sutton was a jewel dealer who was often brought into contact with people who are either criminals or victims of crime. He is one of the best known, if not the best known, jewel dealer in England. Despite the fact that he's not a professional detective, he keeps getting involved in crime solving due to his profession. He has a consuming desire for particularly valuable stones, which he termed "stone hunger" or "jewel-hunger". He is wary of thieves because of his line of work, having two armed men ready at the ring of a bell and a private wire to the nearest police station.
