Origin[]
Bolivar the Talking Ostrich is a talking ostrich with thick bowlegs, tiny wings, a derby/top hat, and he smoked cigarettes. The character appeared in sound shorts created by Walter Lanz for Movietone Pictures such as Blue Notes.
In Bolivar's first animated short according to actor Pinto Colvig's own account, he was filmed in liveaction as a “wandering minstrel clarinet player” who was followed by and animated ostrich named Bolivar. At the end of the cartoon, the pair fight and then the ostrich steals the man's clarinet.
Public Domain Animated Appearances[]
- Blue Notes (1929) - Lost Media
Notes[]
- Very little information about the cartoon series has survived so it is unknown how many shorts were made, and no surviving footage is available on the Internet.
- The actor Pinto Colvig would later go on to voice characters such as Goofy, Pluto, Practical Pig, Grumpy, Sleepy, and various noises for Dopey for Disney. He also played Bluto from Popeye and went on to portray Bozo the Clown.
