Origin[]

Br'er Gator is a character originating from the Uncle Remus stories, namely the fables Why the Alligator's Back is Rough and Brother Rabbit & the Gizzard-Eater. In these stories, Brer Gator traditionally served as an antagonist and enemy to Brer Rabbit.

In one of these stories, Brer Gator attempted to eat Br'er Rabbit only for the rabbit to trick him into lying in a fire which caused his back to grow course. In another story, Brer Rabbit used fake rumors to make the gator insecure enough to agree to ferry Brer Rabbit across the river for free.
