Gaspard Caderousse, Dantès’s envious neighbor, witnesses the plot against him but is too cowardly to intervene. Over time he becomes a thief and murderer, ultimately stabbed by Benedetto while attempting another robbery. Before dying, he repents and recognizes Dantès’s identity, serving as a warning of wasted redemption.
