Origin[]
The first appearance of Captain Easy from 1929.
Originally a supporting character in the daily comic strip Wash Tubbs, Captain Easy is introduced as a taciturn toughguy foil, solemn and more capable in physical combat than the bumbling Wash.
Early on, he is portrayed as having a somewhat mysterious past. He is an American. Not much is revealed immediately, giving him an aura of competence and intrigue. He becomes the muscle or the adventurer whom Wash depends on and looks up to. When in trouble or dangerous situations, Captain Easy is the one who can fight, protect, rescue, and help in dire straits.
Captain Easy's introduction marked a major shift in tone in the strip, becoming less humorous and incorporating an ongoing action-adventure narrative. Over time, he became more prominent, eventually surpassing Wash in terms of popularity.
