Charlie Chan was Honolulu police detective loosely based on real life Hawaiian detective Chang Apana. Chan was portrayed as benevolent and heroic and was conceived as an alternative to Yellow Peril stereotypes and villains like Fu Manchu. Many stories had Chan traveling the world beyond Hawaii as he investigated mysteries and solved crimes.
