Origin[]
Christopher Robin's Penguin is a toy penguin plush that was one of Christopher Robin's toys. A obscure photograph shows A.A. Milne and his son Christopher Robin playing with a penguin toy alongside the bear that would become Winnie-the-Pooh.
Christopher’s mom Daphne Milne may have bought the toy at Harrod’s like the other toys that would inspired the Pooh series’ characters. In the early years of the 20th century, toy penguins soared in popularity as the exploits of Antarctic explorers such as Shackleton and Scott fascinated the public.
The penguin pictured could be a plush of ‘Squeak’ which originated in Harrod's 1922 catalog and came from Pip, Squeak and Wilfred, a popular cartoon-strip.
Notes[]
- A character by the name of Penguin later appeared in The Best Bear in All the World, a 90th anniversary sequel to Winnie-the-Pooh, in a story titled “Winter: in which Penguin arrives.” This character is still copyrighted, but the original toy as well as the Squeak character from the Pip, Squeak and Wilfred comic strip are already public domain.
