Mercédès, Dantès’s fiancée, waits faithfully for him after his imprisonment but eventually marries Fernand Mondego, Dantès’s rival. Years later, when Dantès returns as the Count, she recognizes him immediately and begs him to spare her son, Albert. Mercédès shows great dignity and compassion, rejecting her wealth and title after her husband’s disgrace and returning to live quietly in Dantès’s old home in Marseille.
