“A runabout... I'LL STEAL IT! NO ONE WILL EVER KNOW!”
Dan Backslide is the arch-rival of the Dover Boys and the former sneak of Roquefort Hall. Described as a "coward, bully, cad, and thief", he despises Tom, Dick, and Larry Dover. After kidnapping the boys' fiancée, "Dainty" Dora Standpipe, for her father's money, Dora holds her own and nearly frees herself before the Dover Boys arrive.
Dan Backslide is a despicable and greedy scoundrel. He is also prone to fits of rage, which he suppresses by drinking excessive amounts of alcohol at the local saloon. Despite his bitter hatred of the Dover Boys, he resorts to calling them for help when the captive Dora proves to outmatch him.
