Danglars, once Dantès’s shipmate, resents Dantès’s promotion and helps plot his downfall. In later years he becomes a wealthy banker, but his greed and corruption leave him vulnerable to Dantès’s revenge. Manipulated into financial ruin and captured by bandits, Danglars repents too late, stripped of his fortune and left only with a small sum to live on.
