Origin[]
Doctor Syntax is a disaster-prone, eccentric reverend, widower, and schoolmaster who faces comedic problems while attempting to tour Britain to write a tour book.
Notes[]
- While not the first comical or stylised cartoon, Doctor Syntax is considered to be the first illustrated cartoon character with a defined personality that wasn't intended as a chariacture of a specific real world political or royal figure, and one of the first illustrated characters to release merchandise in Britain.
- Although Syntax is not a chariacture of a real person, he was intended as a parody of Reverend William Gilpin, an author of tour guides, and of the "picturesque" aesthetic that had gained popularity in late 18th century Britain.
