- Both, the USA Network ident and Florida Grapefruit advert featuring Doug were released without copyright notices and not registered within 5 years, making them public domain under 80s-era copyright law.
- Doug would go on to appear in two self-titled television series, one on Nickelodeon and the other on ABC, and a feature length theatrical film. These iterations of the character, where he was 11 years old instead of a college student, remain under copyright - Disney owns the Doug supporting cast and the more well-known iteration of the Doug character, while Nickelodeon only keeps the rights to its run of Doug episodes.
