Origin[]

Ducky Wheeze is a minor but memorable character from the 1943 Looney Tunes short To Duck or Not to Duck, directed by Chuck Jones. He is an obese, long-beaked duck serving as the referee during a boxing match between Daffy Duck and Elmer Fudd.

Ducky Wheeze is characterized by his large body, exaggeratedly loud voice, and a distinct wheezing laugh which gives him his name. Despite his role as mediator, Wheeze is more of a comedic side character than a driving force in the plot, acting as a biased and comically inept official, clearly favoring Daffy throughout the match with his over-the-top mannerisms and vocal delivery to win over the audience’s sympathy.

Notes[]

  • This short entered the public domain in 1971 due to United Artists failing to renew the copyright in time.
  • Despite Daffy Duck and Elmer Fudd being heavily featured in Wheeze's first appearance, they themselves do not enter the public domain until 2033 and 2036 respectively due to their debut cartoons still being under copyright.
