Little Toomai was a young boy whose father Big Toomai was the driver of an elphant named Kala Nag (which means Black Snake). One day, Kala Nag heard a call from a far-away wild elephant, and he takes up Little Toomai on his trunk and sets off for an adventure.


  • It was first published in St Nicholas Magazine (December 1893) and later reprinted in the collection of Kipling short stories, The Jungle Book (1894).
  • The story was filmed in 1937 as Elephant Boy directed by Robert J. Flaherty and Zoltan Korda starring Sabu Dastagir.
  • In 1950, the publisher Fox Feature Syndicate published the comic book series, Sabu, Elephant Boy, loosely inspired by Toomai of the Elephants.
