Fernand Mondego, later the Count de Morcerf, betrays Dantès to eliminate his rival for Mercédès’s love. Rising through the military by treachery, he gains wealth and power but is eventually exposed by Dantès and Haydée as a traitor and murderer. Disgraced and abandoned by his family, Fernand ends his life in suicide.
