Real Name

Never Bird

First Mentioned

Peter Pan, the Boy Who Wouldn't Grow Up (1904)

Created by

J.M. Barrie & Ela Q. May

Origin[]

The Never Bird is a fairly prominent animal character in J. M. Barrie's Peter and Wendy, but is mentioned only in passing in the play Peter Pan, and not at all in the various film adaptations. She rescues Peter from drowning, when he is stranded on Marooner's Rock, unable to fly, as the tide is rising. She lets him use her watertight nest as a lifeboat, enabling him to sail to the mainland.

Notes[]

  • The Peter Pan play is not in the public domain in England or the United States. Special legislation was passed that gave the play a perpetual copyright. The characters, however, are in the public domain (as are the novels).
