Origin[]
Flip is a supporting character in Winsor McCay's comic strip "Little Nemo in Slumberland," which ran from 1905 to 1927. He is portrayed as mischievous, impulsive, and often self-centered troublemaker of Slumberland. Despite his flaws, Flip is a loyal friend to Nemo, the protagonist.
Physically, Flip is depicted as a green clown-like figure with a beady bulbous nose, a wide grin, and exaggerated facial expressions. He wears a trim outfit, complete with a top hat and vest. This colorful attire emphasizes his playful and unpredictable nature. He is usually seen carrying a large cigar.
Upon first meeting Nemo, Flip was intent on accompanying the princess himself and would often amuse himself by disturbing his sleep with a "Wake Up" sign written on his top hat, causing Nemo to wake up at the end of the strip. After rescues Flip from execution by King Morpheus' firing squad, Flip would befriend Nemo and become a regular foil to him. While Nemo is innocent and curious, Flip is more cynical and prone to mischief. He often leads Nemo into trouble with his reckless behavior, but he also provides comic relief and adds excitement to Nemo's adventures.
Despite his flaws, Flip occasionally demonstrates moments of kindness and bravery, showing that he is not entirely selfish. He is also portrayed as resourceful and quick-witted, often finding clever solutions to the challenges they face in Slumberland
