Origin[]
Gérard de Villefort, the deputy prosecutor who imprisons Dantès, acts to protect his own career because the letter Dantès carried would expose Villefort’s Bonapartist father, Noirtier. Ambitious and self-serving, Villefort’s hypocrisy leads to the destruction of his family: his wife poisons their relatives for inheritance, and his illegitimate son returns to expose him publicly. Faced with the deaths of his wife and children and Dantès’s revelation of his identity, Villefort descends into madness.
