Giles is the hotel janitor where Sally and the Blake father and son are spending the night during a vacation. He shows up at the beginning of the investigation by request of the police chief to see if the visiting investigators are prepared to question the suspects and witnesses in the death of Mr. Throckmorton. Emmet Blake and his father, Inspector Blake head up the investigation. Emmet thinks to himself that Giles would be a prime suspect for some people, given his appearance. Fortunately for the hapless janitor, Tom Bridges and Agnes Throckmorton, the wife of the deceased, are fine candidates for investigation.
