Notes[]
- The Gnoles are given no physical description in Dunsany's original tale, though Sydney Sime's original book illustrations depict them looking relatively mammalian and humanoid.
- The Gnoles likely served as the basis for the Gnolls in the Dungeons and Dragons RPG series, where they were depicted originally as a cross between a gnome and a troll before being reimagined as a race of anthropomorphic hyenas in Advanced Dungeons & Dragons.
