Origin[]
Goober first story, Glenville Torch (May 7, 1931)
Goober, a young, strong, and somewhat boastful man raised by a lion named Oolala, is determined to become the strongest man on earth within a year. As he speeds through the jungle, stopping frequently to admire his muscles, he declares his intention to defeat Looneyack, a deer. Despite minor injuries, Goober sees himself as physically perfect. His attention is suddenly caught by a girl, and he approaches her, proudly introducing himself and recounting his unusual upbringing among lions.
Public Domain Appearances[]
- Glenville Torch (May 7, 1931 - October 1, 1931)
Notes[]
- Goober the Mighty is a parody of Tarzan created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, only the two stories published in the Glenville Torch, the student newspaper of Glenville High School in Cleveland, Ohio: one on May 7, 1931 and the other on October 1, 1931.
- In 1984, Eclipse Comics released the two-issue series Siegel and Shuster: Dateline 1930s, collecting material the duo assembled in the mid-1930s but never previously published. Among the featured characters were two of Siegel and Shuster’s rare creations.
- To illustrate this entry, artwork featuring the character was sourced from Kaänga Comics #10 (January 1952), art by John Celardo.
- Only the original newspaper stories published in 1931 are in the public domain; the comic book version first published in 1984 remains under copyright.
