In the story Melody of Hate, Harry Jefferson is a crooked song publisher whose niece was engaged to songwriter Neal Valentine. Jill and Neal headed to Ruby Club after Harry met with Neal to talk about his latest song, where they met with guitarist Paul Starr and singer Avalon Ayres. Avalon is worried about their pianist Boppy Gates who has disappeared. Paul Starr mentions that Bobby started to act funny after meeting with Harry Jefferson a few days earlier.
Suddenly Boppy arrived at the Ruby Club completely drenched. He explains someone threw him into the river to try and drown him. Boppy then quits the band and leaves. Avalon and Neal decide to go to Boppy's hotel and find out why he has been acting strangely. When they arrive, the duo discovers he hasn't been to the hotel all day. After talking around to gather clues, the pair finds out they should meet with a trumpet player named Riverboat Davis.
Neal takes a taxi to Riverboat's place and is attacked by the musician until the trumpeter realizes Harry Jefferson did not send Neal. Riverboat Davis explains that Harry Jefferson stole his brother's fortune to break into the music business. Harry ordered Boppy and Riverboat to be eliminated because they knew about his past. Riverboat warns Neal that Harry's niece Jill will be the next target.
Neal heads to Harry's office where he is talking with Jill. Before Harry can shoot his niece with the gun hidden in his desk, Neal gets into the office through the window and punches Mr. Jefferson. After Neal reveals that he knows everything thanks to Riverboat Davis, Harry Jefferson begins to feel guilty for everything he has done and agrees to turn himself in to the police.
