Origin[]

The hugag is a species of fearsome critter from American folklore, specifically lumberjack oral tradition, said to be live around the Great Lakes region.

The creatures bear somewhat of a resemblance to the moose, but have many key differences. The hugag has jointless legs and an elongated upper lip, preventing them from lying down or grazing, so they resort to browsing twigs and leaning against trees to rest. The latter is taken advantage of by hunters, who cut notches in the trees to have them fall when the hugag rests on it, leading to the creature falling and being left helpless, not being able to get up due to its stiff legs.
