Origin[]

Ignatz Mouse is a character who is frequently annoyed by Krazy Kat's naive comments and peculiar observations. He generally reacts by throwing bricks at Krazy's head, which he always seems to have on handy. Krazy Kat takes these attacks as a sign of affection, much to his chagrin.

These antics often catch the weary attention of Officer Bull Pupp, whom he often attempts to shield his plans from by hiding his supply of bricks, disguising himself, or enlisting the aid of willing Coconino County denizens (without making his intentions clear).

Ignatz is married with three children, though they are rarely seen. Though he seems to show utter contempt towards Krazy, there are some indications that he might harbor some hidden feelings of affection for the feline.

Notes[]

  • A mouse foreshadowing Ignatz first appeared in Herriman's earlier comic strip series, The Dingbat Family (1910-1916) as a rather ordinary looking mouse who would occasionally throw bricks at the house cat before spinning off into its own self-contained strip.
  • Despite being male-coded, much like Krazy, Herriman considered Ignatz to be nonbinary and gender fluid.
