Origin[]
Jefferson F. Davis was an American politician and the only president of the Confederate States from 1861 to 1865. Born in Kentucky and raised in Mississippi, he attended West Point and served six years in the U.S. Army. He married twice—first to Sarah Knox Taylor, who died shortly after their wedding, and then to Varina Howell. Davis served in the U.S. House of Representatives, fought in the Mexican–American War, held a U.S. Senate seat, and was Secretary of War under President Franklin Pierce. He resigned from the Senate in 1861 when Mississippi seceded and led the Confederacy during the Civil War. Captured in 1865, he was imprisoned for two years without trial and later became a symbol of the Lost Cause in the South.
