Origin[]

John Adams was a Founding Father, revolutionary leader, and the second U.S. president (1797–1801). A lawyer and advocate for justice, he defended British soldiers after the Boston Massacre, served as a key delegate to the Continental Congress, and helped draft and promote the Declaration of Independence. As a diplomat, he secured loans and negotiated peace with Britain. He wrote the Massachusetts Constitution, which influenced the U.S. Constitution.

Adams served as the nation’s first vice president under Washington before becoming president. His term was marked by tensions over the French Revolutionary Wars, the Alien and Sedition Acts, and conflict within his Federalist Party, leading to his 1800 defeat by Thomas Jefferson. Afterward, he retired in Massachusetts, later rekindling his friendship with Jefferson.

Adams and his wife Abigail founded a prominent political family, including their son John Quincy Adams, the sixth president. He and his son were the only early presidents who never owned slaves. Adams died on July 4, 1826, the 50th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.
