Origin[]

John Steel is a fictional character from the Super Detective Picture Library, a British comic book series that ran during the mid-20th century. He is a “Special Agent” operative working for British Intelligence, often portrayed as a rugged, tough, and highly skilled investigator with a strong sense of justice.

Prior to serving in the MI-5, Steel started his a career as a sergeant in the London Police. He tried enlisting when war broke out in 1939, only to be tuned down, but his sense of duty could not be extinguished. He promptly joined the secret service and was soon being dispatched all over Europe on special missions, from thwarting international espionage plots to partaking in brutal battles.

After the war, Steel transitioned into a career as a private detective, using his skills to take on cases that others couldn’t solve. His espionage history occasionally comes back to haunt him, with former enemies and allies alike appearing in his cases, adding layers of personal stakes to his investigations. During this period, the young clarinet musician Riff Morgan often accompanied him.

John Steel is typically depicted as a tall, muscular man with chiseled features and a square jaw. His former background as a policeman has made him highly disciplined, resourceful, and unafraid to face danger head-on, but it has also left him with a certain world-weariness. He is often seen as stoic, with a dry sense of humor, and while he may seem aloof, he is deeply committed to protecting the innocent and bringing criminals to justice.

Skills and Abilities[]

Thanks to his Special Forces training, John Steel is highly skilled in hand-to-hand combat, marksmanship, and various forms of espionage. He is also a master of disguise, able to infiltrate enemy operations with ease. His keen analytical mind allows him to solve complex cases, often outsmarting both criminals and law enforcement.
