Origin[]
Jor-L was Krypton's foremost scientist and husband to Lora. After the birth of their son, Jor-L later learned of the terrible cause behind the earthquakes that plagued his planet, the volcanic eruptions were just a prelude to an internal cataclysm that would result in the planet's destruction.
Distraught with this newfound knowledge, Jor-L later realized a solution spurned on by Lora's wish of being able to explore the stars. He decided to help build a ship to act as an "ark of space" to help save the people of Krypton from extinction.
However, when he brought his findings and proposal to the counsel, he was spurned with them saying his findings to be unfounded and refused to fund a full fledged ark for the planet. Despite this rejection, Jor-L proceeded to spend months building a prototype model that could hold one person and send them to Earth as it was the nearest planet that was capable of supporting life. Sadly, just as he was about to test the model, the aforementioned cataclysm began to crack the planet apart. Acting quickly, Jor-L and Lora decided to place their son into the model and send it out to save his life. As the ship flew out of the range of the planet's annihilation, Jor-L and Lora sadly perishes in the earthquakes spawned from the disaster.

Jor-L held vast scientific knowledge that made him the foremost scientist upon the planet Krypton.
