Karl Crowder owns a flea circus and is obsessed with studying the dramatic interplay between three of his fleas, Rosa, Felix, and Herman. He explains to his skeptical friends that Rosa loves Herman.
A friend tells him the insects have no consciousness at all. He says Karl is just seeing what he wants because he desires to feel as if he holds the "world in his hands."
