Protector Karnock rules the planet Sirion at the "rim of the system" while his older brother, King Stephan, battles a five-year war against alien invaders. Unfortunately for Sirion's populace, Karnock is a ruthless dictator. His rule of terror is displayed in the fact that he executes innocent Sirion's by throwing them in a pit of fire.
Karnock intends to have a brutish noble named Ulgar marry King Stephen's daughter, Valya. Karnock believes the marriage will permit him to become king of Sirion. When King Stephan hears of Karnock's intention to usurp the throne from him, he sends Space Admiral Jon Lasim to investigate matters.
