Origin[]
The kasa-obake is a Japanese yōkai resembling an umbrella with one eye and either one or two feet. It is generally, but not always, considered to be a spirit that has possessed a discarded umbrella.
It is part of the tsukumogami classification of yokai which are tools that have acquired a kami or spirit. The term is generally understood to be applied to virtually any object "that has reached its 100th birthday and thus become alive and self-aware".
The kasa-obake is simply a harmless trickster which likes to jumpscare and lick its victims. The kasa-obake is the best-known household object-shaped yōkai. It is also among the many inanimate objects that appear in the "The Parade of a Hundred Monsters" and are well known since the Edo era.
Notes[]
- Unlike other Japanese yōkai, nobody has ever claimed to see a kasa-obake in real life.
- In the games Kirby Dreamland 3, Super Mario Land 2, Yokai Watch, Monster Hunter Rise, and more have monsters based on the Kasa-obake appear.
- In addition the hat worn by Skull Kid from a Legend of Zelda Majoras Mask is the head of the Kasa-obake.
- The Aknosom from the game Monster Hunter Rise was designed as a hybrid between a crane and a Kasa-obake.
