Origin[]
Lurulu is a sprightly and mischievous troll from Lord Dunsany's 1924 novel The King of Elfland's Daughter. Unlike traditional depictions of trolls as brutish or malevolent, Lurulu embodies a playful and whimsical nature, delighting in pranks and the disruption of routine. Among his peers in Elfland, he is held in high regard for his ability to astonish and humorously perplex others.
The Elf King entrusts Lurulu with delivering a potent rune to his daughter, Lirazel, which ultimately compels her to return to Elfland after her marriage to the mortal Alveric. Later in the narrative, Lurulu becomes the whipper-in for Orion, Lirazel and Alveric's son, assisting in hunting unicorns by managing the hounds. His fascination with Earth's constant movement in spacetime and ever-changing environments leads him to entice other trolls to cross into the mortal realm, despite the aging effects time has on them there.
Lurulu's character serves as a bridge between the magical realm of Elfland and the human world, highlighting the contrasts between the two and emphasizing themes of curiosity and the allure of the unknown.
