Lyman is the owner of Spot and the roommate of his tennis rival Jon Arbuckle and his cat Garfield. He is less outwardly sarcastic than Jon, but is just as prone to anger, is more stern and disciplinary a pet owner than Jon is, and can come off as rude when he's intending to be sincere.

- When Jon was adapted for mainstream syndication as Garfield, the Lyman character was slowly phased out, with multiple pieces of Garfield media giving contradictory answers on his whereabouts, most of which being dark jokes.
- The name Lyman was first used by Jim Davis for a character in Gnorm Gnat.
