Origin[]

Mammon is one of the seven princes of Hell as categorized by Peter Binsfeld, a 16th-century German bishop and demonologist. Binsfeld's classification of demons associates each demon with one of the seven deadly sins. Mammon is linked to the sin of greed.

Mammon holds a high rank among the demonic hierarchy as a prince of Hell. He oversees the domain of wealth and material possessions, ensuring that greed spreads across humanity. His influence is pervasive in the mortal world, encouraging corruption in governments, corporations, and individuals. He tempts individuals to prioritize riches over spiritual and moral values, and is a master of persuasion, capable of making even the most virtuous individuals covet wealth and material possessions. Mammon’s presence can also bring about moral decay, leading people to engage in unethical or criminal activities to obtain riches.

The term "Mammon" appears in the New Testament, particularly in Matthew 6:24 and Luke 16:13, where it is used to signify wealth or materialism in opposition to God.

In John Milton's "Paradise Lost," Mammon is depicted as a fallen angel who values gold and riches above all else, having spent his time in Heaven admiring its golden floors than praising God.
