A compassionate fellow, Nickodemus the Mule takes a liking to Mary, a young girl kidnapped by bandits. He organizes a gang of animals, including the formerly hostile Zoop and the Woozy, to attack the bandits and rescue Mary. Nickodemus returns Mary to her parents, and wins their gratitude.

Mary is a character L. Frank Baum added to the plot of Queen Zixi of Ix when it was made into a film (and re-named The Magic Cloak of Oz). She never appeared in the book.
