John Janus was a double agent really working for S.P.I.D.E.R. but, when he was given the Menthor helmet, he got mental powers with a side-effect: the helmet made him good and the effect slowly became more permanent.
Menthor's helmet explained.
He was killed in action in issue 7 of T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents.
