When the Tujie barbarians attempted to invade China, the Emperor set up a draft to obtain soldiers to fight them off. Mulan's father was too old to fight, and her little brother was too young, but the emperor required one man from each household. Fearing for the safety of her loved ones, Mulan disguised herself as a man to represent her household. Her father, an old soldier who had taught his daughter to fight, was not happy with this plan. However, he was convinced to go along with it, when his daughter bested him soundly in combat.
Disguised as a man, Mulan eventually rose to the rank of General. After 12 years of fighting, Mulan returned to her home as quickly as she could. When General Li came looking for her, ha was quite surprised to discover that his former commrade in arms was a woman. He wasted no time in asking for her hand in marriage.
