Origin[]
Myles Standish was an English military officer hired by the Pilgrims as the military adviser for Plymouth Colony. He sailed on the Mayflower and became the colony’s first militia commander in 1621, a position he held for life. Known for his preference for preemptive and often harsh military actions, he led several conflicts against Native American groups, which unsettled some colonists despite his effectiveness as a soldier. Standish also served the colony as an agent in England, assistant governor, and treasurer.
In the 1640s he retired from active military service and became a farmer in Duxbury, though he continued as an advisor and nominal commander. He died there in 1656 at age 72. While a staunch defender of the colony, he never formally joined the Pilgrims' church.
