Nyoko is the witch doctor in an African village who utilizes magic related to elephants. By using powdered ivory, he can access The Realm of the Mist Gods.

Two brutal ivory traders, Congo Smith and Limey Gubbins, brutalize the villagers in their greedy pursuit of ivory tusks. Enraged to find some men from the village taking ivory tusks for themselves, Congo shoots them dead. Congo goes to confront Nyoko over the incident, whom he whips to death.

In pursuit of ivory, Congo and Limey go in search of the Realm of the Mist Gods. They see elephant-shaped features in nature as the ghost of Nyoko follows them through the realm. Inextricably lost and beginning to be paranoid of each other, the ivory hunters find shelter in a cave. Congo consults a guide book and native lexicon to discover that Nyoko means "Elephant King". Congo accidentally kills Limey, while Nyoko's spirit looks on undetected. Congo leaves the cave, but is killed by an elephant near the village.
