Origin[]

Countess Olga de Coude was an ally of Tarzan who first appeared in the novel The Return of Tarzan (1915).

She met Tarzan when after feeling rootless in the wake of sacrificing his prospects of wedding Jane Porter, the lord of the jungle leaves the United States for Europe to visit his friend Paul d'Arnot. On the ship Tarzan becomes embroiled in the affairs of the Countess and her husband, Count Raoul de Coude, and two men attempting to prey on them, Nikolas Rokoff and his henchman Alexis Paulovitch. Rokoff is actually Olga's brother. Tarzan thwarts the villains' scheme, making them his deadly enemies.

In France, Rokoff repeatedly tries to eliminate Tarzan, eventually engineering a duel between the ape man and Raoul by making it appear that the former is Olga's lover. Tarzan refuses to defend himself in the duel, even offering his pistol to Raoul after the latter fails to kill him with his own. This gesture convinces Raoul of Tarzan's innocence. In return, he finds Tarzan a job as a special agent in the French ministry of war. Tarzan is assigned to service in Algeria.

In the film The Revenge of Tarzan (1920), Tarzan and Jane are traveling to Paris to help his old friend Countess de Coude, who is being threatened by her brother, Nikolas Rokoff. Rokoff has Tarzan tossed overboard. He survives, comes ashore in North Africa, and goes to Paris to search for Jane.

In Paris, Tarzan reunites with his old friend Paul D'Arnot, who informs him that Jane was taken to Africa. So Tarzan returns just in time to save Jane from a lion attack, and soon defeats Rokoff and his henchmen.
