Origin[]
Peri is a fictional character and the protagonist of José de Alencar's O Guarani (The Guarany). He is a Brazilian Indian from the Goitacá tribe (despite the title of the book referred to the Guaraní, both tribes are distinct). The story is set in 1604, during a time when Portugal and its colonies were under Spanish rule. Peri saves Cecília de Mariz, the daughter of Dom Antônio de Mariz, a Portuguese nobleman who lives in a remote inland region.
Peri abandons his tribe and dedicates himself to protecting Cecília out of love and loyalty. He is seen as a brave and noble warrior who faces many dangers to keep her safe. When the Mariz estate is attacked, Peri rescues Cecília and escapes with her after the house is destroyed.
During their escape, they survive a great flood by using a palm tree as a canoe, reflecting an indigenous legend.
