Origin[]

Pete (also known as Peg-Leg Pete or Bootleg Pete) is a cartoon villain created in 1925 by Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks. He is the nemesis of Mickey Mouse, Oswald The Lucky Rabbit and Julius the Cat.

He is often depicted as the cartoon protagonist's abusive, cigar-smoking boss (though in the case of Steamboat Willie, he could be considered a reasonable force), or a rival for the affection of Minnie Mouse or Sadie, being successful on rare occasion.

In some Alice Comedies cartoons, he can be seen commanding a group of mouse henchmen.

Notes[]

Pete bear

Pete as a bear in an Oswald the Lucky Rabbit cartoon

  • Pete was originally a bear in the Alice Comedies and Oswald the Lucky Rabbit cartoons, and was first depicted as a cat in Steamboat Willie - both depictions are public domain.
  • Pete's peg-leg debuted in the Alice Comedies, but was not given to his cat self until 1930's The Cactus Kid, leaving the prosthetic's status for use on cat Pete ambigious until The Cactus Kid's release to the public domain in 2026.
  • His later iterations - such as the friendlier Petes from Goof Troop and Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, and the more overtly villainous Petes from Mickey's Christmas Carol and The Three Muskateers - remain copyrighted for the foreseeable future.
