Origin[]
Pete ("The Civilian's Friend") is a tiny, seemingly imaginary imp who appears before Ralph Philips, a young US army soldier who had just returned home from enlistment at Fort Itude. Having seen just how his hometown of Spooner had grown without his presence there, Pete tries to persuade the dysphoric Ralph into staying and not re-enlisting in the Army, making points of how workers in the military tend to not make as much as civilians who have the same jobs as well as being forced to wear uniforms.
His arguments are countered by his soldierly lookalike Re-Pete, who presents Ralph with reasons why he should consider re-enlisting in the Army. When Ralph starts listening to his points, Pete gets more desperate to win his favor, coming up with increasingly hairbrained excuses and ideas on how to make a civilian living - including the possibility of striking oil in his back yard. In the end, Ralph is convinced by Re-Pete to rejoin, narrowly making it back to the base to reenlist, with Pete accompanying him.
