A tiny space vessel traveled through a magnetic disturbance, causing it to become stranded within a rotary telephone earpiece on Earth. The human owner of the telephone misinterpreted the the alien distress signals as prank telephone call, and smashed the telephone headset open in frustration, unknowingly allowing the aliens to escape.
