Origin[]
At the behest of gangster Garoogy, Professor Spindrift has built a suit of robotic armor. However, he soon realizes that with all the power the body would give him, Spindrift should operate it himself instead of turning it over to Garoogy, and he barges into their hideout and throws Garoogy out, saying he'll be in charge now. Plastic Man and Woozy come by Spindrift's house, deciding to look into a newspaper story that he just quit his college professor job as a result of his low pay, because how suspicious that sounded. Spindrift flings them out of sight with his robotic super-strength, but Plas just bounces back and catches Woozy. They pursue Spindrift, now knowing they have a dangerous mad scientist on their hands.
Spindrift easily takes over Garoogy's gang and makes their first robbery a smashing success when he tears the vault door right out of the wall. During their celebratory party he comes up with an even better idea for all this money he can easily acquire now, which is to build an even more powerful robot body. Unfortunately for him, Plastic Man's snuck into the lab and figures out that while Spindrift's robot body is indestructible, the human head sticking out of the top's vulnerable. Spindrift escapes in the new body and seals Plastic Man inside an old bathtub, but forgets to plug the drain. The scientist chases his fellow gang members out of their hideout to seal it up so the hero can't get him, only to find the hero hiding inside a box of supplies he'd brought with him. Spindrift tries to wear a helmet for this rematch, but Plas pokes him in the eyes with stretchy fingers. Finally capturing the scientist, Spindrift is yet confident he won't go to jail, because there isn't a jury that would believe a wild story about a crook in a rampaging Frankenstein body. Plas' boss tells him the other gang members are prepared to testify against him, shattering Spindrift's bravado. He becomes a model prisoner, but refuses to enter the prison's machine shop.
