Robots (or Robotess for female models) were the main products of R.U.R. (Rossum's Universal Robots) - a robotics megacorporation.
Unlike their mechanical counterparts, Rossum's robots are artificial humanoids created and grown through a complex formula made from a strange and primitive protoplasm discovered by Mr. Rossum back in 1920, after researching the seas around his island. This strange formula was capable of being grown into all manner of organic lifeforms, both monstrous and barely humanoid. But through proper refinement, a special growth unit, and technological enhancements later made by possible through the work of Harry Domin and his engineers, the perfect organic humanoid workforce could finally be grown, outfitted with the best mechanical enhancements and metallic outer shells.
The robots were incredibly advanced and human-like in behavior, capable of following orders to a tee. They are regarded as soulless, unthinking appliances with no sense of free will by their creators, whose only purpose was to serve man. This sentiment stems from Mr. Domin believing that humanity should no longer have to slave away maintaining factory machines and that instead machines should toil and slave away on serving man, with the goal of deifying humans while robots acted as their neophyts.
Domin would be proven wrong though when one of his creations, the idealistic Damon rebelled against his "father" and formed an uprising which proved disastrous for both the company, humankind and even the robots themselves who now had no means of reproducing after destroying their human creators and the factories that made them.
Regardless of their grim fate, two robots known simply as Primus and Helena were able to evolve beyond their artificial natures, with the organic bodies eventually becoming more human-like while their personalities became more and more empathic - to the point where they were regarded as having true souls. A miracle which was recognized by the compassionate former R.U.R. executive, Mr. Alquist, who guided these two next-generation robots to be the progenitors for the next generation of humans and propagate the world just as Adam and Eve before them with their own unique families.
